Abstract

This essay discusses Case Study as a qualitative research modality in the context of the crisis of Modernity. The epistemological foundations of the Case Study include elements marginalized or excluded from the modern paradigm, such as complexity, the researcher as a cognoscente and empirical entity, the social actor taking an active role in the research, among others characteristics features of the emerging paradigm. The methodological implications of these epistemological foundations are various, emphasizing the use of intersubjectivity and (at the operational level) the importance of interpersonal abilities for communication and empathy as well as abilities to analyze, conceptualize, interpret and synthesize. As a general conclusion, the crisis of Modernity has brought legitimacy to the Case Study as a research modality, insofar as the scientific status of the qualitative approach has been revaluated.

Key words: case study, modernity, qualitative paradigm, emerging paradigm.
