The Use of Internet Tools in Social Research

Guillermo Henríquez A. (ghenriqueza@entelchile.net). Departamento de Sociología, Universidad de Concepción, Chile

Abstract

Modern media of communication, such as the Internet, offer new social research mechanisms that permit the collection of information using traditional social research techniques (analysis of Internet data bases, the collection of bibliographic material and research findings) as well as the collection of first-hand information through survey application, discussion group formation, and in-depth interviews. This report present the feasibility of applying some traditional techniques to long-distance research through the use of tools found on the Internet. Technical procedures made possible by these means are highlighted using the author’s previous research experience.
