Abstract

This article seeks to support the application of the complex sociology of knowledge to the history of economic thought, in order to study the formation of its main theories and conceptual frameworks. With the starting point of the incommensurability of research paradigms’ problem, the construction of metatheoretical systems is proposed to analyse non-verifiable assumptions at the core of scientific theories. Subsequently, the main implications of that proposal are analysed vis-a-vis the social and historical nature of social sciences. The article concludes with some methodological considerations for the construction of metasystems in the history of economic thought.

Key words: incommensurability, complex sociology of knowledge, non-verifiable assumptions, social sciences specificity, history of economic thought.
